Frequently Asked Questions :

How long am I certified for?

All certification cycles are two years. Those who participated in the certification maintenance program in June 2016 will have a CHAM credential "good through" date of May 31, 2018. A two year cycle has been established to maintain current knowledge with the changing aspects of patient access. This time interval has further been established as appropriate given the national standards for certification.

When am I due to recertify?
You may check the status of your certification at any time by logging into your Certification Central dashboard. Once logged in, please click "Certification" and then "Certification Central" and you will be redirected to your dashboard.

When can I submit my application?
Certification maintenance applications for the upcoming cycle are accepted between June 1-30, 2018 and payments are accepted via mail no later than June 30th (postmark date).

How do I submit my hours/payment?
All contact hours are submitted online; you may log hours at any time in your Certification Central dashboard. Please note: you can only submit your application and pay online during the month of June via your dashboard with a credit card or choose "Submit without Payment" to mail us a check payment.

What happens if I miss the application deadline?
Those who do not submit certification maintenance materials by June 30th must participate in the Retroactive Maintenance Program if they wish to retain their credential.

What's the timeframe for hours I can submit?
Contact Hours to be reported (60) must have been earned between June 1, 2016 and May 31, 2018.

Do I need to keep any of my materials after I submit them online?
Yes, 10% percent of submitted applications will be pulled for audit. Those selected for an audit must submit evidence of the continuing education hours claimed. Additionally, supervisors of those selected for audit will be contacted to confirm the requisite hours have been worked  during the two (2) year time frame.

The audit serves as a mechanism to ensure that certificants are meeting the minimum standards to maintain the knowledge and skills needed to remain current in the field of patient access.

**The 2017 CHAM Certification Maintenance window closed June 30th, 2017. You may re-obtain the credential by filling out the Retroactive Maintenance Form and submitting the fee for each cycle missed.

Fulfilling certification maintenance requirements demonstrates one's efforts to maintain continued competence in the field of patient access services and the desire to keep a certification credential like the CHAM and the CHAA. NAHAM requires those holding the CHAM credentials to participate in the Certification Maintenance Program in order to retain their certification.

As a credentialing body, NAHAM requires certification maintenance in part because the knowledge and skills required for competent occupational and professional performance change over time. Additionally, because the certification maintenance process encourages certificants to remain current in their field, it increases confidence among the public, employers, and other stakeholders.

Continuing competence is defined by NAHAM as demonstrating knowledge, skills, or ability to proficiently perform as a certified manager in patient access throughout the certificant's career. NAHAM promotes continued competence throughout the certificant's career by requiring periodic submission of contact hours and ongoing work experience.

While NAHAM makes every effort to ensure that all certification maintenance reported to NAHAM are of the highest quality, it is incumbant on the certificant to maximize their learning through the documented activities.

NAHAM makes a reasonable attempt to notify certificants of their certification maintenance responsibilities through the Connections Newsletter, via broadcast email and through the Certification Central resource; however, it is ultimately the certified individual's responsibility to know when they need to renew their certification as well as all of the processes, fees, and policies associated with successful certification maintenance.

Please review the chart below for timelines associated with certification maintenance.
